Are you looking to start your career as a Medical Secretary within the NHS?
If so, then keep reading.
I started in the NHS 30 years ago as a Medical Secretary. When I was at school choosing my options, I had never heard of a medical secretary. I had heard of a legal secretary and originally that was what I decided I wanted to do.
One day my Grandad told me about a relative of his who worked as a Medical Secretary. I asked him what they did. He told me that she was a secretary to a doctor who worked in Harley Street in London. I was really interested in this and got the prospectuses of a lot of colleges to see if I could find a course on becoming a Medical Secretary.
There was one and I applied and got on the course. It was for 2 years and taught me medical terminology, shorthand and typing. I then got a job as a Medical Secretary. There was a lot more to the job than just typing medical letters and reports but I was never taught that. I had to learn these as I went along.
I can’t teach you how to type or medical terminology, but I can teach you all the other things that you need to know to become a great medical secretary.
